Over 80% of Americans traveled last summer, and we anticipate just as many or more may travel this year. When the roads are filled with summer vacationers, you should take precautions to keep your family safe while traveling. Unfortunately, we have seen firsthand many accidents resulting from poor planning. Southside Wrecker wants to help keep your family safe while you are off to make memories.

Tip 1: Have your Car Inspected–Nothing puts a damper on your vacation like getting stranded on the side of the road. Many car issues can be prevented through maintenance. For example, if your tires are worn down, you have a chance to find out and have them changed before getting down the road into an unfamiliar area. Otherwise, you may have to call a towing service or a mechanic who may not be trustworthy. In addition to the hassle, many car issues can be dangerous. Blowing a tire on the interstate could lead to an accident. Even just a simple worn-out windshield wiper could endanger your family by limiting your visibility. Before getting on the road, make sure to take your car in for a thorough inspection, including brakes, tires, fluids, wipers, etc. A car inspection will be far more affordable than calling for roadside assistance.

Tip 2: Map Out your Journey–When you have a GPS on your phone, leaving home without a clear plan may not seem like a big deal. The problem with relying on your GPS alone is that you will be completely caught off guard with road work or closures. Also, you will be unfamiliar with the rest stops, gas stations, restaurants, and lodging along the way. Not only could you end up lost, but you could end up in an accident while you are trying to figure out your directions on your phone. Go ahead and make a plan in advance, so you will not be unfamiliar with where you will be going.

Tip 3: Follow the Speed Limit–Everyone wants to get to their vacation as soon as possible, but speeding to get there is not worth it. Traveling at higher speeds will put you at a higher risk of an accident. Getting in an accident could prevent you from getting a vacation at all, so slow down and travel safely. Some vehicles have cruise control, which can be helpful to ensure that you travel at the right speed.

Tip 4: Do Not Drive Drowsy–There are over 50,000 accidents annually from drowsy drivers or drivers falling asleep. If you are getting tired while driving, pull off and rest or swap if you have another driver with you. Staying awake and focused while driving is important for your safety and the safety of the other motorists around you.

Tip 5: Minimize Distractions–Paying attention to the road should be your focus for the safety of your family and everyone traveling near you. Before you leave your home or a stop along the way, make sure your kids have everything they need. Set your GPS for your destination and then leave your phone alone. Your text messages and calls can wait until later. Driving distracted is one of the leading causes of roadway fatalities. Minimize the chances of being distracted for the safety of all.

We hope you have a wonderful summer vacation wherever the road may take you! Southside Wrecker is here if you need roadside assistance in and around the Atlanta area.
